In the yard

Our lawns are active participants in the environment around us. Everything we use to fertilize and control weeds, infiltrates the ground and eventually our water supply.   Follow these tips to promote a healthy environment for us all.

• DON'T use toxic fertilizers & weed control treatments.
• Use compost, organic fertilizers and natural weed controllers.
• Buy mulch that is untreated with herbicides or other pesticides. Adding six inches (or more) of clean, seed-free mulch will suppress weed growth and nourish the soil at the same time. Be careful of unlabelled herbicide-soaked bark mulches.
• Catch, store & use rain water for watering your garden or plants.
• Plant trees and shrubs to help absorb & filter carbons.
• Landscape with native plants - they adapt to periods of drought & may require less water than non-native plants.
• Water lawns/gardens sparingly in the AM or PM to prevent excessive evaporation.
• Route downspouts away from driveways.
• Hand pull weeds, such as dandelions, etc, at least twice a year: in May & in Fall.
• Mow the grass frequently, don't cut shorter than three inches.
• Taller grass keeps the turf healthy and resistant to drought and weed invasion.
• After mowing your lawn, let the clippings lie. They nourish the lawn for free.
